About Us
Heritage GSP Kennels has been training and breeding German Shorthaired Pointers for over 18 years. We exclusively work with GSPs. I stay pretty busy throughout the year working and looking after my dogs. We pride ourselves on breeding healthy, sound dogs.
I have been working with dogs since I was a young boy. I used to breed and train pit bulls. I had them retrieving doves, though some ate their fair share before retrieving mine! I was young and happy to have muscle-bound, mean-looking dogs. I've always been an outdoors guy, so as I got older, I looked for a bloodline that could fit my lifestyle. Gun dogs, it was. That was the end of my pit bull years.
How smart and how willing to please is your dog? Your lifestyle will directly reflect your dog’s behavior and discipline. I did my research, looking for the best overall gun dog. In my opinion, GSPs are definitely a top contender. These GSPs have everything that I can ask for in a dog. Truly versatile, very social, eager to please, and always trying to understand what you are asking of them.
My first GSP was my Brother. Honestly, I was impressed with his ability to communicate. Brother’s hunting drive was aggressive and natural. I had smart dogs in the past and I liked to claim to be self-taught, but Brother definitely taught me a lot more. All I had to do was listen. Brother was my oldest and he eventually retired. He lived over 13 years, and he would still bring a ball or a stick to visitors to tempt them to throw it for him! He was always just as excited to retrieve, only a lot slower and more graceful. Brother and Molly started it all.
Here at our kennels, we train for basic obedience and bird training. Obedience training starts after eight weeks of age. I like to start my bird training after seven months old. Before I breed any dogs, they must be two years of age, obedience trained, and started on bird training. I have been select breeding since the beginning and have continued to produce some of my best dogs. When selecting a GSP to enter into the breeding program, I look for:
Trainability with a nice disposition
Natural desire to please
Natural ability to hunt
Their beauty will catch your eyes and their personality will take your heart. These true athletes are not for everyone. These dogs have the potential for great success, but at the same time, if you're not prepared, they can be challenging. Intelligence and high energy must be addressed. If you do not have an active lifestyle, then I do not recommend these dogs for you. However, not all of my customers are hunters. Park walks, hiking trails, and water activities are also an ideal lifestyle. Lots of customers look for a jogging and bike workout buddy as well. I have been training dogs a long time, so my experience makes it easy for me.
We are a small, family-owned kennel whose breeding program is now dependent on the deposits received for selected females. My daughter, Celeste, and I have enjoyed every minute we spend with our dogs. Their tails will be docked and dewclaws removed. They will be updated on all their vaccinations and will come with their AKC registration papers. We have sold puppies to multiple states across the country. I will be asking some key questions before a deposit is placed.
